Kim

Alexander Kim is a cellist from Las Vegas, Nevada, currently pursuing undergraduate studies at the University of Michigan’s School of Music, Theatre & Dance, where he studies under Professor Amir Eldan. Known for his expressive tone and thoughtful musicality, Alexander is building a versatile and evolving career in classical performance.

 

He began his cello studies in Las Vegas with Jeayoung Jo and Andrew Smith of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. A graduate of the Las Vegas Academy of the Arts with a major in Orchestra, Alexander developed a strong foundation in both solo and ensemble performance. His dedication to the instrument led to acceptances from several leading music programs, including Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music, Boston University Tanglewood Institute, and New York University, before he chose to attend the University of Michigan.

 

Alexander has been recognized in a range of competitions for his musical interpretation and technical skill. In 2023, he earned First Prize at the Bushell Scholarship Competition, the Charleston International Music Competition, and the Opus State Level Music Competition. That same year, he received the Platinum Prize and Outstanding Musicality Special Award at the Saint-Saëns International Competition, was named Alternate in the MTNA Competition, and received Honorable Mention in the 2024 round. Earlier honors include First Prize at the Silver State Competition (2021) and finalist recognition in the Brimhall Cello Competition. As he continues his studies and performance career, Alexander is committed to deepening his understanding of the cello repertoire while contributing to meaningful musical experiences both on and off the stage.
